CB-GIG 1st Intercalibration Exercise: French situation concerning diatom bio-indication in rivers
1er exercise d'Intercalibration du CB-GIG : Situation Française relative à la bio-indication diatomique en cours d'eau

The present meeting, set up at the request of the 2 co-coordinators of the 1st CB-GIG Intercalibration Exercise, John Murray-Blight and Roger Owen, has been organized by the Estonian University of Tartu, ES. Being the 1st Intercalibration meeting organized by the CB-GIG in application of the WFD, the national Experts of a biological element were asked : to present their national evaluation system; 2) to make the state of the national data available for the exercise ; 3) to inform the other participants, if necessary, about specificities encountered in their own country, that should require a collective methodological discussion. These presentations are done in separate worshops regrouping specialists of the same biological quality element (aquatic macrophytes, phytobenthos, macroinvertebrates...). The last day, depending on the biological element and on the data characteristics available per biological element, methodological options for doing tjhe most adequate intercalibration have to be discussed during 2 plenary sessions. In this general context, Cemagref's presentation first described the 2 national diatom indexes (IPS, IBD) and their principles of construction, then different existing tools allowing to stock the diatom inventories and to calculate the index values. No WFD-compliant assessment system being already officialized at our national level, a prototype of assessment system based on IPS on the one hand, on IBD on the other hand, has been presented. IPS is already known to perform a little better, but is based on a infinite list of taxa. It is then very difficult to normalize and to apply by private consultants. So, France will probably decide later on to use IBD for the national application of WFD.
La présente réunion, mise en place à la demande des 2 co-coordinateurs du 1er exercice d'interétalonnage du CB-GIG, John Murray-Blight et Roger Owen, a été organisée par l'Université estonienne de Tartu (ES). Comme il s'agit de la 1ère réunion d'interétalonnage organisée par le GIG Central-Baltique en application de la DCE, les Experts nationaux d'un élément biologique ont été invités :1) à présenter leur système national d'évaluation ; 2) à dresser l'état des données nationales pour l'exercice ; 3) à informer les autres participants, si nécessaire, des spécificités rencontrées dans leur propre pays, qui pourraient nécessiter une discussion méthodologique collective. Ces présentations se font dans des ateliers séparés regroupant des spécialistes du même élément de qualité biologique (i.e. macrophytes aquatiques, phytobenthos, macroinvertébrés...). Le dernier jour, les options méthodologiques pour réaliser l'interétalonnage le plus adéquat, en fonction de l'élément biologique et des caractéristiques des données disponibles par élément biologique, doivent être discutées lors de 2 séances plénières. Dans ce contexte général, la présentation du Cemagref a d'abord décrit les 2 indices diatomiques nationaux (IPS, IBD) et leurs principes de construction, puis différents outils existants permettant en pratique de stocker les inventaires de diatomées et de calculer les valeurs d'indices. Aucun système d'évaluation DCE-compatible n'étant encore officialisé au niveau national, un prototype de système d'évaluation basé sur l'IPS d'une part, sur l'IBD d'autre part, a été présenté. L'IPS est déjà connu pour fonctionner un peu mieux, mais se base sur une liste infinie de taxons. Il est donc très difficile à normaliser et à appliquer par des consultants privés. Ainsi, la France décidera probablement d'utiliser davantage l'IBD pour l'application nationale de la DCE.
