Evaluation and modification of the Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Sampler for the monitoring of both neutral and acidic pesticides into the tributaries of the Arcachon's Bay

Evaluation et modification du Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Sampler pour le suivi des pesticides neutres et acides dans les tributaires du bassin d'Arcachon

Résumé

Recent long-term environmental monitoring studies have demonstrated a drastic decrease in concentration of persistent organic pollutants over the last decade. Indeed, the health and society growing expectations have led to transform the pesticide production by providing and using less persistent and accumulative active substances (i.e. more hydrophilic like 2,4-D, dicamba, bentazone, etc.). The emergence of new pesticides (e.g. triketones, sulphonylureas), highly effective even at low concentrations, resulted in significantly reduced field application rates. If they are less likely to be bioaccumulated, their high solubility facilitates their transfer from soils to aquatic compartments, and particularly to continental water (surface and ground waters). Consequently, conventional spot sampling may be inaccurate because of the fugacity of the contamination, and the very low concentrations in water requiring low limits of quantifications (LOQs). Recently, a lot of work dealing with passive sampling has been done, and it is emerging as the best alternative to spot sampling since it enables to integrate pollution events occurring throughout a period of time by an in situ preconcentration of the contaminants. Despite the importance of acidic herbicides in the range of pesticides used for agricultural and urban uses, and the emergence of other acidic compounds (drugs, endocrine disruptors etc), little research has so far been undertaken to develop a specific sampler for this class of chemicals. Among the existing devices, polar organic chemical integrative sampler (POCIS) allows the sampling of hydrophilic compounds (0< logP
