Since few years, managers of rural areas carried on a new interest on the not-specialized farming systems, supposed more able to complementarities. The few information on these systems led us to analyze theirs current and past characteristics and dynamics in a small livestock farming area of the french Massif Central. An inventory and a typology of the farms were carried out on the Mezenc plateau in 2009 (within the research project PSDR - Valprai); these elements were compared with the observations made in 1987 by the Cemagref institute. The non-specialized livestock systems remained so various as in 1987, with no important differences between mixed and specialized livestock systems in term of dimension, enlargement, intensification and transmission. They are more different in term of localization, with a lower presence in high-altitude and an important regrouping of surfaces close to the farm-stead. Their future represents a stake locally important for space, employment and milk production of mountain.
