Improving the composting treatment of sludge mixed with bulking agents: Influence of the initial characteristics of the mixture

Optimisation du traitement par compostage des boues : influence des caractéristiques initiales du mélange

Résumé

The effectiveness of the aerobic biodegradation of organic wastes largely depends on the conditions imposed to the micro-organisms in the substrate. Indeed the establishment of a good aerobic biological activity relies on three main factors: (1) the accessibility of the micro-organisms to the biodegradable organic matter, (2) the maintenance of aerobic conditions in the substrate, (3) the maintenance of favourable environmental conditions in the substrate. As it is above demonstrated, physical characteristics (moisture, particle size, free air space, etc.), characterizing the substrate before its treatment, will largely influence the composting behaviour. Then the objective of this work was to study how the initial moisture of the mixture and the particle size of the bulking agent (influencing the reacting specific surface and also the free air space) would influence the composting behaviour of a sludge mixed with a bulking agent. The composting behaviour of the mixtures of sludge and bulking agent were studied in 300-litre composting pilot. An experimental design was planned in order to obtain appropriate data with a minimum of experiments (10). Five values of each design factor were tested and the planning of experiments was designed by using a StatGraphic Software. Results showed that the initial moisture directly affected the total oxygen consumption, that is to say, the biodegradation. Particle size influenced the compaction rate along the composting with a crossed effect with moisture. Initial particle size and moisture also influenced the air dispersion factor through the porous medium. The results of the experimental design already enable us to propose ways of optimization of the waste mixture.
