Agricultural land-use changes within multifunctionality perspective: method proposal and compared application on a French and an Italian region

Résumé

In the European socio-political context, various demands on agricultural functions appeared, particularly on environmental aspects. As land-use changes are determinant for these environmental functions and processes, geographers, ecologists, agronomists have more and more focused on these land-use changes. A bibliographic review pointed out that these regards are more frequently on changes drivers, rarely on their impacts for multiple functions in the whole of an agricultural region. Thus, we developed an approach concerning agricultural land-use changes carrying on multiple environmental functions that are relevant to a landscape. Our main hypothesis is that spatial organisation of agricultural activities influences environmental functions. Although our agronomist regard, we have to focus on landscape entity for several reasons: 1) to have a global view on spatial organisations of agricultural activities, drivers and changes, 2) to consider the impacts of multiple interactions of farming practices with bio-physical conditions, 3) to conform to the proper spatial unit of environmental demands and evaluation. We will present and discuss our methodology to characterise agricultural land-use changes influencing several environmental functions at landscape scale. Indicators on farming practices aggressiveness and environment sensitiveness are elaborated combining agricultural census and geographic data. The first application concerned two regions that differ for environment, agriculture and social conditions: a temperate mountain region with livestock productions in France (Combrailles) and a mediterranean predominant hilly region with crops and livestock productions in Italy (Maremma). Results were in terms of methodology and analysis. The approach appeared functional i) to reveal spatio-temporal variability of agricultural land-use in a region, ii) to characterize the impact of this variability on environmental functions. Those results give support and prospects to agronomists for downscaling and analysing individual farms contributions to multifunctionality.
