From volunteered geographic information to volunteered geographic OLAP: A new challenge

De l'information géographique volontaire à l'OLAP géographique volontaire : un nouveau défi

Résumé

Data acquisition technologies such as sensor networks, satellites, etc. has led to a deluge of geo-referenced data.geo-referenced data. To help decision makers, Spatial Data Mining and Spatial OLAP systems have been developed for exploring and synthesizing huge volume of geo-referenced heterogeneous data. These systems rely on closed, well-integrated and structured (according to an analysis goals model, the so-called spatio-multidimensional model) huge data sets. On the other hand, new geographic technologies such as geospatial positioning, web mapping and wikis gave birth to Collaborative Web-based maps systems that allow experts and amateurs (volunteers) to create and share thematic oriented geographic information, leading to the concept of Volunteered geographic information (VGI). While VGI systems are gaining momentum, they suffer from drawbacks such as weak data credibility and quality ; and they do not provide techniques to efficient handle analysis of historical data. As a result, there is a urgent need for investigating the integration of VGI into SOLAP : the work described in this paper attempts to fulfill this need.
