Towards a spatial decision support system for animal traceability

Vers un système d'aide à la décision spatiale pour la traçabilité animale

Résumé

Animal traceability is of great importance for many government and private organizations, in particular for economic and sanitary control purposes. Traditional tracking systems can memorize the main movements of cattle, and geolocate individual animals using RFID. We can now consider a new generation of traceability systems in which successive locations are automatically recorded several times per day for each animal. Such systems can be coupled with analysis techniques to help decision-making, and to validate or redirect hypotheses. Here we describe a spatial decision support system for animal geolocation acquisition and analysis of sanitary issues. In sanitary alerts, the system can use recorded animal movements to identify animals that have been in contact with a diseased animal. The system is applied to tracking beef cattle in the Brazilian production system as a case study. This work is part of the OTAG project for improving methods and geotechnology to record reliable and accurate data on beef production.
